Durango Abandons V6: Only Hemi Engines in 2026

Dodge Durango 2026: Full Transition to Hemi Engines

Dodge has introduced the updated lineup of Durango SUVs for the 2026 model year, and the main news is a complete overhaul of the powertrains. All models in the series are now equipped exclusively with Hemi engines.

The base GT variant has received a new 5.7-liter V8 instead of the previous 3.6-liter V6. This added 65 hp of power and 130 lb-ft of torque, reducing the 0-60 mph acceleration time from 7.4 to 6.2 seconds. The model’s price increased by $2,000, but Dodge emphasizes that it is “the most affordable V8 all-wheel-drive vehicle on the market”.

More Powerful Versions and Price Reductions

The R/T model has brought back the option with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8, which was absent in the 2025 model year. This engine develops 475 hp and costs less than $50,000. The top-of-the-line SRT Hellcat version has become $5,000 cheaper, with its starting price now at $79,995. Both Hellcat versions feature a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 710 hp, allowing for a 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds.

Orders for the GT and SRT Hellcat will open on August 13th, while the R/T will go on sale later this year. For enthusiasts who want more personalization, a Jailbreak version is available for an additional $995.

These changes show that Dodge is betting on powerful gasoline engines, despite the general trend towards electric vehicles. The decision to completely abandon “regular” engines in favor of the Hemi series is particularly striking, making the Durango lineup unique among three-row SUVs. At the same time, the company is trying to balance performance and affordability, as seen with the price reductions on the top versions.
