Two Compact Cars Could Restore Japan’s Fame for Affordable Hot Hatches

New Hot Hatches from Toyota and Suzuki

Rumors are emerging from Japan that Toyota and Suzuki are preparing to launch new sports hatches, which could appear in 2026. It is likely a matter of the Toyota GR Starlet and an updated version of the Suzuki Swift Sport. Both models are expected to be affordable in price and focused on driving enjoyment.

Although there is no official confirmation from the manufacturers yet, reports indicate that both cars are in the final stages of development. The new Swift Sport is expected to debut in the spring of 2026, and the GR Starlet in the fall of the same year. Both models are likely to receive front-wheel drive, turbocharged engines, and special chassis tuning for improved handling.

What is Known About the Toyota GR Starlet

The new GR Starlet could replace the Toyota Passo, which was previously based on the Daihatsu Boon platform. The model is expected to receive not only a new name but also serious changes in design, suspension, and engine. Among the possible options is a 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with an output of about 150 hp, which will be paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

This will make the GR Starlet the most affordable model in the Gazoo Racing lineup, offering an alternative to more expensive cars like the GR Yaris. There are also rumors about the creation of a special version for rally competitions in the Rally4 class.

Updates from Suzuki

Suzuki is preparing to end production of the current Swift Sport in November 2025, signaling the arrival of a new generation. The updated model will likely debut at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025. Under the hood, there could be an upgraded 1.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

Previous versions of the Swift Sport offered 138 hp for the Japanese market, while European models were slightly weaker at 127 hp. The new version is expected to feature an even more aggressive design that will distinguish it from the base variants.

If the rumors are confirmed, these two models could become a real gift for fans of small but exciting cars. It is especially important that they are released beyond Japan and become available on global markets. In a world dominated by crossovers, the appearance of such models could remind us that driving can be a real pleasure.
