Twice Engaging the VTEC in this Two-Engine Honda Prelude

The fifth generation Honda Prelude was already a reliable entry in the front-wheel-drive coupe class. But who could have predicted that one day we’d see something like this on the market? At first glance, it’s clear this is not your ordinary Prelude, but even the exterior updates won’t fully prepare you for the kaleidoscope of mechanisms hidden beneath the surface.

Two Engines, Double VTEC

Of course, Honda has always been known for its 2.2-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine under the hood. But here, it’s about something wild, as this car has a second 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Yes, you hear it right, there is an engine located directly behind the passenger compartment, allowing you to have two VTEC engines working together in harmony (or chaos, depending on your point of view).

If you’ve ever shouted “VTEC just kicked in, yo!” then you know how exciting that is. Now imagine shouting it twice, because that’s exactly what happens when these two vibrant engines rapidly move towards the red zone, harmoniously reaching maximum revs.

Clearly, building a car with two engines and two five-speed transmissions is no easy task, so this Prelude is built on its own tubular frame. The gas, clutch pedal, and gear shift lever are connected to both engines and transmissions, but the car can also be driven using only the front wheels with the standard front engine.

At the initial stage, the Honda H22A engine produces 200 hp and 156 lb-ft (211 Nm) of torque, which means this car now has about 400 hp at its disposal. A video included in the listing on Cars & Bids shows it accelerating to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds, which is truly impressive. Even more impressive is that the car weighs only 2,820 pounds (1,279 kg).

Other Significant Upgrades

The car has seen several other upgrades, including a 12-gallon gas tank, 15-inch Rota Slipstream alloy wheels, and Toyo Proxes R888R tires. Additionally, there are custom rear upper strut bars, lowering springs, a trimmed interior with integrated roll cage, and two racing bucket seats.

The for-sale listing notes that the odometer currently reads 138,300 miles (222,572 km) and that it was designated a “damaged by accident” title in 2009. Fortunately, the car was restored and now has a clean title from North Carolina.
