New Ferrari 849 Testarossa: A Controversial Design
The new Ferrari 849 Testarossa, positioned as the successor to the SF90 Stradale, has sparked considerable controversy due to its appearance. The discussions were so loud that they almost overshadowed the car’s other characteristics. If Maranello had used this opportunity to bring back one of the signature features that defined the design of their cars in the 1970s and 1980s, the reaction from enthusiasts might have been much warmer.
The Idea of Pop-Up Headlights
During a recent international presentation of the hybrid supercar, Ferrari designer Jason Furfaro revealed that his team considered adding pop-up headlights to the car. This would have allowed the 849 Testarossa to pay homage to models like the 288 GTO and F40, but regulatory requirements made this too difficult to implement.
“We have to meet standards in all markets where the car is sold, and the rules of different countries completely exclude hidden lamps,” Furfaro explained in an interview with CarExpert.
Ferrari still managed to make an indirect reference to the old design by using thin headlights embedded in a black strip that extends across the entire width of the supercar’s front end.
A Look into the Past
While the 849 may not be beautiful by traditional standards, there is no doubt that Ferrari will find it extremely easy to sell. Furfaro notes that strong inspiration was drawn from cars like the 512 S and 512 M — two prototype race cars built in the 1970s. He noted that this marked a shift in Ferrari’s design towards more angular shapes, moving away from the flowing lines with which the brand is perhaps most associated.
As with the Luce, it seems that some people adore the design of the 849 Testarossa while others hate it. Despite the criticism directed at the company, Furfaro added that Ferrari is not interested in playing it safe.
“I think it’s more important to really set a new trend than to play it safe. We have to create a new desirable object for the imagination,” he said.
Technical Specifications and Performance
From a performance standpoint, there is no doubt that the 849 Testarossa is extremely desirable. Like the SF90, it uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, albeit with new cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, and turbochargers. This engine produces 819 hp and works together with three electric motors, providing a total power output of 1035 hp, which is sent to all four wheels. This is more than enough to help owners forget about the exterior looks.
Despite the controversial design, the Ferrari 849 Testarossa is a bold step forward that demonstrates the brand’s willingness to experiment with forms, even at the risk of drawing criticism. The abandonment of pop-up headlights due to regulatory constraints shows how globalization affects even the most iconic design elements. However, by focusing on incredible power and references to its racing heritage, Ferrari seems to be betting that technical specifications and an emotional connection to the past will outweigh any aesthetic doubts. This car will undoubtedly become a collector’s item, and its provocative appearance will only add to its aura of exclusivity.
