Jeffrey Epstein’s Automotive Desires
There is always something irresistibly attractive about things that cannot be obtained. This impulse seems to have extended even to the car tastes of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Among the multitude of emails released by the US Department of Justice are numerous conversations with Elon Musk, as well as discussions about importing a number of cars not offered on the American market. In late 2014 and early 2015, Epstein was interested in the possibility of obtaining a Toyota Century.
As a well-connected man, Epstein bypassed the usual channels and, through assistants, reached out to people at Toyota. However, he was refused, as representatives explained that to supply the Century to America, the car would have to comply with American regulations. This would require a series of modifications and would not be feasible for supplying just one car.
Searching for Workarounds
This seemed obvious, but Epstein’s assistant suggested finding a dealer who would deliver the Century to America and then modify it to comply with federal safety standards.
Even before considering the Century, Epstein was interested in the possibility of obtaining a Hyundai Equus limousine. He asked his assistant if this model was offered in New York or if it could be imported.
Broad Automotive Interests
Epstein and his assistants also discussed a range of other vehicles, including the Chevrolet Express, Nissan NV, and Ford Transit. He also showed interest in Maybach and Rolls-Royce cars.
He was even forwarded a crude joke about a Ford and Renault joint venture. It proposed combining the Clio and Taurus models to get a “Clitaurus,” which “comes in pink, and the average male car thief won’t be able to find it.” The joke continues, but the gist is clear.
These emails reveal not only specific automotive preferences but also a characteristic way of thinking and acting—a desire to obtain exclusive things, despite rules and logistical obstacles, by using personal connections and seeking workarounds. The car story fits into the broader picture of Epstein’s life, where the desire to own a private jet, a private island, and rare vehicles reflected a pursuit of status and control, often accompanied by a disregard for standard procedures. Despite all his resources, even for him there were barriers, such as strict US vehicle safety standards, which are not so easy to bypass even with substantial finances.
