General Motors Officially Announces Release of New Silverado and Sierra Models This Year

Patented images reveal the design of the 2027 model year Chevrolet Silverado. The pickup is expected to receive an evolutionary exterior design borrowed from the Traverse model, as well as new V8 engines.

GM confirmed that the new generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will debut in the coming months. This news came during the company’s fourth-quarter report, where it was stated: “Chevrolet and GMC will introduce the new Silverado and Sierra this year.”

Popular Model Awaits Update

The Chevrolet Silverado is one of the most popular cars in America: last year, over 560 thousand units were sold, including 358,771 Silverado 1500s. However, the current model, introduced in 2019, is becoming outdated, as there have been no significant updates since 2022.

Chevrolet has long been working on updating the pickup, and spy photos have repeatedly caught the 2027 Silverado 1500 during testing. The final appearance of the car can now be seen in a design patent registered in the USA.

New Face of the Pickup

As reported by Car & Driver, the design is credited to Tyler Moffett, who worked on numerous Chevrolet pickups and SUVs. According to the patent images, the Silverado will receive a completely new front end, very similar to the one installed on the Traverse.

It includes separate headlight units, a mesh grille with a long horizontal bar, a sturdy bumper, and a noticeable air intake for improved fuel efficiency. The side profile is characterized by streamlined body shapes and stylized fenders.

Evolution of the Rear

The rear has remained quite conservative. A spoiler on the cab and a small sliding rear window will appear. The new tailgate will replace the “CHEVROLET” lettering with a bowtie emblem. New rear taillights, vaguely reminiscent of those used on the Ford F-150 Lightning, and an updated bumper with wider and more practical steps are also expected.

The tailgate is expected to receive an updated version of the Multi-Flex technology, which offers six usage modes—from a step to a cargo stop.

Focus on New V8 Engines

Chevrolet is keeping details about the new pickup under wraps, but the company is investing billions in developing a new generation of V8 engines. They are expected to replace the current 5.3 and 6.2-liter units, offering more power, better fuel efficiency, and lower emissions.

The new V8s will likely have displacements of 5.7 and 6.6 liters. For comparison, the current 5.3-liter engine produces 355 hp, and the 6.2-liter one produces 420 hp.

Other engines in the lineup remain a mystery, but it is likely that the familiar turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder engine will remain, which may also be updated for improved performance.

The Silverado update is happening at a key moment for the American auto market, as competition in the full-size pickup segment intensifies. The evolutionary design, as opposed to a revolutionary one, indicates Chevrolet’s strategy to maintain recognizability and loyalty among its existing large customer base. Investments in new V8 engines, despite the general global trend towards electrification, clearly demonstrate that for the US market, traditional powertrains remain critically important. The success of this model will be of enormous importance for General Motors’ financial results in the coming years.
