Exclusive: Nissan Supports the Revival of the Xterra That Fans Dreamed Of

The Return of the Nissan Xterra in the Form of Updated Concepts

The Nissan Xterra is returning in the form of two new concepts to be presented at the SEMA show in 2025. Both off-roaders have received approval from Nissan and their Nismo division. They combine elements from various modern Nissan models, supplemented with special off-road equipment.

Project Update

One of the concepts, developed by Nick Raymond Scherr, already shows significant progress. Scherr shared exclusive photos of the interior and exterior, showing how the future SUV is taking shape. Although based on the classic Xterra, this version integrates many components from the 2022 Nissan Frontier and newer models.

This custom SUV retains the spirit of the original Xterra but receives key updates such as a fully updated front end, doors, mirrors, and an interior with a modern multimedia system.

Among other updates are a vented carbon fiber hood, roof-mounted LED lights, and plans to install larger tires and a modified suspension for improved off-road capability.

The Model’s Return History

Nissan had not mentioned the Xterra for a long time, as it disappeared from the market back in 2015. However, in the future, the company plans to introduce an electric SUV with a design inspired by the Xterra. Until then, fans can enjoy two concepts that demonstrate what a traditional gasoline-powered 2026 Xterra might have looked like.

These concepts are the result of the work of Nick Raymond Scherr, a video blogger and Nissan fan who works at the Avondale Nissan dealership in Arizona. Although Nissan is not directly involved in the development, the company supports the initiative.

Technical Features

The concepts combine elements from various Nissan models, including the second-generation Xterra, third-generation Pathfinder, and the modern Frontier. They will receive:

Both off-roaders will be equipped with all-wheel drive and a body-on-frame construction. One will get a 3.8-liter V6, and the other a more powerful V8, giving it a more aggressive character.

The process of creating the concepts can be tracked on Scherr’s page, where he plans to share all stages of the work. The full debut is expected to take place later this year.

These concepts not only demonstrate the potential for the Xterra’s return but also highlight the interest in classic off-roaders in a modern execution. They could serve as inspiration for Nissan in developing new models, especially against the backdrop of the growing popularity of off-road vehicles.
