Kia EV5 Weekender concept presented at auto show
Kia introduced a new concept car called the EV5 Weekender at the auto show in Guangzhou, China. This model demonstrates a more robust and recreation-oriented approach to the compact electric SUV.
Key features of the concept
The Weekender family and its significance
The EV5 became the fourth Kia model to receive the Weekender designation, following the EV9, PV5, and Tasman. Each of these models interprets the focus on active recreation in a unique way.
While none of the Weekender concepts have yet turned into a production model, this could change as buyers increasingly seek robust, lifestyle-oriented versions of these vehicles.
Exterior and design
The concept was developed by the Kia China Style Design Team. Exterior changes are obvious: the car features a raised suspension, larger wheels with all-terrain tires, and increased ground clearance. The color palette includes a matte beige shade with bright lime accents, which has become a hallmark of the Weekender series. Extended fenders, new underbody protection, massive side sills, and a large roof luggage box have also been added.
Interior updates
The interior has undergone significant changes. The wide display panel now extends in front of the passenger, complemented by a compact digital instrument cluster. Updates include a new steering wheel, a redesigned center console, modified air vents, and modern upholstery materials. The cabin is filled with practical elements, such as mounts for tableware and additional roof rails for securing gear.
Other updates include a new steering wheel, a redesigned center console, modified air vents, and fresh upholstery with modern colors and 3D texture.
Technical aspects
Kia did not disclose the technical specifications of the concept, so it is unclear whether it differs mechanically from the production EV5, apart from the updated suspension. The EV5 is built on the E-GMP architecture and is available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions with different battery options. The release of a GT version with a more powerful powertrain has also been confirmed.
There is a high probability that the production EV5 lineup will eventually receive a simplified version of the Weekender concept for camping and off-road travel enthusiasts. Kia has a habit of turning its concepts into real models, and this project looks ready for implementation.
This presentation highlights the growing demand for electric vehicles adapted for an active lifestyle. Considering the global trend towards sustainability and mobility, such concepts could significantly expand the market by offering solutions that combine daily needs with outdoor adventures.
