Maserati Electric Car Not Canceled, But Its Release Is Postponed

Maserati MC20 Folgore: Project on Pause, But Not Canceled

Recent reports about the cancellation of the electric version of the MC20 were not entirely accurate. Maserati has only temporarily suspended the development of the Folgore model, which was initially planned to be presented this year. This means the project could be revived in the future if the market situation changes.

Today, interest in premium-class electric vehicles has significantly decreased, which influenced the company’s decision. Furthermore, the financial difficulties of the parent company Stellantis led to the cancellation of a number of projects, among which the MC20 Folgore was likely included.

Waiting for Customers

“I don’t believe now is the perfect moment to launch such an electric supercar. We’ll see,” stated Maserati CEO Santo Ficili.

He emphasized that the development of the Folgore is already quite advanced, but the company decided to postpone the launch to analyze market trends. The model may debut as an electric version of the recently presented MCPura, but only on the condition of sufficient demand.

For now, Maserati is focused on traditional engines, especially the V6 Nettuno, which is popular among clients. However, the brand’s engineers do not rule out the return of the V8 for special projects, as some buyers still prefer “mechanical” cars without heavy battery packs.

Recent years have shown that the electric vehicle market is too unstable for such niche products as electric supercars. Even in the premium segment, buyers often prefer traditional engines, forcing manufacturers to revise their strategies. At the same time, technologies are rapidly developing, so the situation could change in just a few years.
