Rivian Electric Vehicles Become Smarter, But Apple Users Are Dissatisfied

Rivian Updates Navigation System Using Google Maps

Rivian has introduced an updated navigation system that combines the company’s own developments with Google Maps technology. The new system is already available in the latest models of the brand’s electric vehicles. It offers data on 250 million locations worldwide, including information about establishments, operating hours, and reviews.

In addition to the standard Google Maps features, the system retains Rivian’s unique capabilities, such as calculating range based on driving style and the use of additional equipment. Intelligent selection of charging stations with real-time availability data is also available, including networks like Tesla Supercharger and Rivian Adventure Network.

Integration with Mobile App

The update to the navigation system will also affect the functionality of the Rivian mobile app. Owners will be able to manage routes and settings remotely, which will significantly simplify trip planning.

“We worked directly with Google to create a system specifically tailored for our electric vehicles,” a Rivian representative notes.

This is not Rivian’s first experience collaborating with Google – at the end of last year, the company already integrated Google Cast technology into its vehicles. However, despite the presence of Apple Music in the multimedia system, support for Apple CarPlay is not yet planned.

Rivian’s decision to develop its own infotainment system rather than support third-party solutions is eliciting mixed reactions. On one hand, it allows for better adaptation of functionality to the needs of electric vehicle owners. On the other hand, it limits user choice, especially for those accustomed to other mapping services. At the same time, the integration of Google Maps could become a compromise that satisfies the majority of customers.
