Electric BMW M SUV to Become a Serious Challenge for Porsche and Lotus

BMW Prepares a Powerful Electric Version of the iX5

BMW is testing a high-performance version of the upcoming electric crossover iX5. Based on external signs, such as large brake discs and massive wheels, it can be assumed that this is the iX5 M70 model. It will become a competitor to the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric.

Technical Features and Design

The crossover is equipped with 23-inch alloy wheels and Michelin tires rated for speeds over 240 km/h. The design will likely inherit features from the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, including the characteristic front end. However, the test photos show that the car is still in an early stage of development—the LED headlights are not final, and the body is hidden under camouflage.

“Unlike the iX3, which will transition to the Neue Klasse platform, the iX5 will remain on CLAR. This will allow BMW to offer both electric and conventional versions of the model.”

The iX5 M70 is expected to hit the market in 2025, where it will be able to compete with the electric Porsche Cayenne and Lotus Eletre. However, unlike these models, BMW plans to continue producing conventional gasoline and diesel versions of the X5, taking into account the demand for traditional engines.

The premium electric vehicle market is facing some difficulties due to reduced demand and high customs duties. In response, even Lotus is preparing a hybrid version of the Eletre. Meanwhile, BMW is trying to find a balance between innovation and preserving classical technologies.
