Electric Ford Bronco Costs the Same as Ours but Offers Twice the Power

New Ford Bronco Basecamp in the Chinese Market

Ford has introduced the new Bronco Basecamp model in China, which is available in two variants: fully electric and with extended range. This version is specifically designed for the local market and is already available for order.

Specifications and Features

The electric version of the Bronco Basecamp is equipped with a 105.4 kWh battery and two engines providing 445 hp. The range is up to 404 miles. The extended-range model is equipped with a 1.5L turbo engine and two electric motors, which together produce 416 hp. Its electric-only range is 137 miles, and thanks to the engine-generator, the total range increases to 758 miles.

Development and Market Prospects

The Bronco Basecamp was developed jointly with the Chinese company Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), which allowed the model to be adapted to local needs. This is an important step for Ford, which has significantly lost market share in China over the past decade — from over 1.2 million sales in 2014 to less than 200,000 last year.

Comparison with American Counterparts

In terms of price, the Bronco Basecamp is approximately equivalent to the smaller Bronco Sport in the USA, which starts at $31,695. However, the Chinese model offers larger dimensions, a more powerful powertrain, and advanced technologies. For example, it has a LiDAR sensor on the roof, over 30 sensors and cameras, as well as a luxurious interior with a 15.6-inch multimedia screen and a 70-inch projection display.

Dimensions and Exterior

The wheelbase of the Bronco Basecamp is 116.1 inches, which is identical to the full-size Bronco in the USA. The total length of the model is 197.8 inches, making it larger than both American versions. The design, although reminiscent of the Bronco Sport, has unique features, emphasizing its orientation towards the Chinese buyer.

Future of the Model

Currently, Ford does not plan to export the Bronco Basecamp outside of China, including the North American market. The model is aimed at local consumers, who increasingly value electric vehicles and technological innovations.

The appearance of the Bronco Basecamp in China demonstrates how automakers are adapting to regional characteristics. For Ford, this is an opportunity to regain lost positions by combining familiar design, modern technologies, and attractive technical characteristics. The model also highlights the growing competition in the electric SUV market, where Chinese buyers are becoming increasingly demanding in terms of functionality and autonomy.
