Electric M3 as a Concept: What is Known
BMW is preparing a new generation of the M3, which will feature different types of powertrains. In addition to the traditional petrol engine, the company has unveiled the M Concept Neue Klasse, which is effectively a pre-production version of the electric M3. According to rumors, the production model will be called i3M.
The concept’s premiere took place during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. BMW officially called it “a harbinger of the new design language for high-performance BMW M GmbH vehicles” and stated that it “sends a clear signal about the fully electric future of the brand.”
Design: A Sporty i3 with an Aggressive Body Kit
In shape, the concept resembles the i3 sedan, but with a significantly more aggressive appearance. The comparison with the classic E30 M3 emphasizes its lineage, although the production version will likely carry an “i” badge, which may not please purists.
The exterior is based on last year’s Vision Driving Experience concept but has become closer to production-ready. The LED headlights and roofline resemble the i3, but everything else has undergone radical changes. The front and rear bumpers feature large air intakes inspired by high-speed sailing yachts, cube-shaped “track lights” LEDs, significantly flared wheel arches, and a pronounced ducktail spoiler.
The body is painted in a metallic shade of Monza Red. The splitter, side skirts, diffuser, hood air intake, and roof are made from dark-colored natural fiber. Yellow M Yellow Lights LEDs are borrowed from motorsport, and the mirrors are optimized aerodynamically. The concept is equipped with center-lock wheels and negative camber, while the M chassis provides a wider track and lower ground clearance.
Interior: Four Bucket Seats and a Roll Cage
The interior retains the hardware and Neue Klasse design from the i3, including the infotainment system and the BMW Panoramic iDrive panoramic display at the base of the windshield. However, everything else indicates this is a sports sedan.
The cabin features four separate bucket seats trimmed in Merino leather, with five-point seat belts and structural elements made from natural fiber. The roll cage, upholstered in Nubuck leather, blends with the steering wheel and door cards. The dashboard features a black knitted material with backlighting, while the steering wheel and center console differ from the i3 with special controls and red accents.
Powertrain: Four Electric Motors and 800 Volts
Under the hood is the BMW M eDrive system with four electric motors. It is based on the Neue Klasse Gen6 platform but was specifically developed for electric M models. BMW does not provide the total power output, but sources estimate it in the range of 700 to 1000 horsepower. The 2025 concept is reported to have generated 17,990 Nm of torque.
Power is controlled by the BMW M Dynamic Performance Control system, which is part of the Heart of Joy supercomputer. The company promises “a new interpretation of dynamics, agility, and precision” thanks to individual control of power and brakes on each wheel.
The 800-volt architecture is combined with a battery pack with a capacity of over 100 kWh. It uses an M-specific version of the sixth-generation cylindrical cells, designed to provide higher power, fast charging, and greater range. The battery housing is structurally integrated with the axles to increase rigidity.
Franciscus van Meel, Chairman of the Board of BMW M GmbH, stated: “Even in the new fully electric era, we continue the M tradition, transferring both technological innovations and defining design features directly from motorsport to series production.”
Prospects and Release Date
BMW does not give an exact debut date for the electric M3 (or iM3), but 2027 is considered the most likely window. There are also reports about a successor to the petrol M3 with a mild-hybrid six-cylinder engine, which will feature the styling and technology of the Neue Klasse and will be sold alongside the electric vehicle.
Thus, BMW is preparing two versions of the M3: one with a traditional internal combustion engine and another that is fully electric. This will allow satisfying different customer preferences and meeting the requirements of various markets. The electric version, judging by the concept, promises to be extremely powerful and technologically advanced, while the petrol version will retain a classic approach for enthusiasts. Both models are likely to share the Neue Klasse platform, which will optimize production and reduce costs. It is worth noting that this strategy is quite bold, as the brand attempts to combine heritage with innovation, offering a choice between tradition and the future in the same segment.
