Skoda has introduced the affordable electric crossover Epiq
Skoda has officially introduced its long-awaited entry-level electric crossover Epiq. This happened approximately two years after the first concept demonstration. The new model has the potential to surpass other popular Skoda electric vehicles in sales, including the Enyaq and Elroq. The Epiq stands out with its attractive design, solid technical specifications, and, most importantly, an affordable price.
Technical specifications and platform
The Skoda Epiq is based on the familiar MEB+ platform from the VW Group. Depending on the market, three versions will be offered: 30, 40, and 55. The two base models use a lithium-iron-phosphate battery with a capacity of 37 kWh. They can be equipped with an engine producing 114 hp or 133 hp. Both options have front-wheel drive. For comparison, the base versions of the Enyaq and Elroq are rear-wheel drive.
The range for the Epiq 35 and 40 models is limited to approximately 306 km. The main difference between them lies in the charging speed: in version 35 it is limited to 50 kW at DC stations, while version 40 increases this figure to 90 kW.
The top version is the Epiq 55. It gets a larger NMC battery with a capacity of 52 kWh, providing a range of up to 438 km. The peak DC charging speed reaches 105 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in about 25 minutes. The Epiq 55 is also equipped with a more powerful front engine producing 208 hp.
One common complaint about current Skoda electric crossovers was the lack of one-pedal driving mode. With the Epiq, this issue has been resolved. Additionally, the crossover boasts good aerodynamic efficiency with a drag coefficient of 0.275.
Design and interior
Visually, the Epiq immediately stands out among other Skoda models, and this works in its favor. It features a sharp front end with a darkened lower grille and aggressive headlights and daytime running lights. Black plastic cladding runs along the wheel arches, side panels, and fills the rear bumper. Skoda will offer six different body colors for the Epiq.
As for the interior, it shares a lot in common with the Enyaq, Elroq, and other Skoda models. The dashboard features a familiar 13-inch infotainment display, as well as a two-spoke steering wheel. There are few physical controls, but several physical switches are located under the central air vents for important vehicle functions. Like in other Skodas, umbrellas are hidden in the door panels, reminiscent of Rolls-Royce.
Prices and target markets
Finally, the most important thing is the price. In Europe, the Epiq will start at 25,900 euros (approximately $30,000 USD) for the base Epiq Essence 35. This puts it on par with the similarly sized gasoline-powered Kamiq. In the UK, prices start at 24,950 pounds sterling (around $33,400 USD) for the Epiq SE L 40 version, since the base model 35 will not be sold there. Prices rise to 27,700 pounds for the SE L 55 and Edition 40, to 30,450 pounds for the Edition 55, and up to 31,450 pounds for the First Edition 55.
Thus, the Skoda Epiq becomes a serious player in the affordable electric vehicle market. It offers a modern design, a practical interior, and a variety of powertrain options, which should ensure its high popularity among buyers looking for an inexpensive yet technologically advanced electric crossover. Particularly important is achieving price parity with traditional internal combustion engine cars, which could be a key factor in the mass transition to electric power.
