Electric Mercedes C-Class EQ Gradually Loses Camouflage

Approaching the Premiere

Spy photographers have repeatedly captured the Mercedes C-Class EQ, and the manufacturer officially announced the model last autumn. Its debut now seems to be approaching, as prototypes with minimal camouflage were spotted during testing in Germany.

Front-End Design

Although the front end is still well camouflaged, a previously published teaser image showed that the model will follow in the footsteps of the GLC EQ and receive a luminous, fully enclosed radiator grille. It will also have a luminous surround and front headlights with a star-pattern design.

It is especially worth noting that we are seeing the hood of the production version clearly for the first time. It has soft contours and a protruding central section.

Overall Body Lines

Further along the body, streamlined shapes and a sloping windshield that smoothly transitions into a descending roofline are visible. The overall design is reminiscent of the EQE and EQS, but the C-Class EQ has a sportier and less extravagant silhouette. It is also evident that the model will be offered with both traditional and flush-mounted door handles, as well as with different wheel design options.

Sport Packages

The two prototypes appear to be equipped with either an AMG or a Night Package. They have a number of differences, including sportier wheels, black window trim, black sills, and black exterior mirrors.

Rear End and Interior

The rear features muscular wheel arches and a trunk lid with an integrated spoiler. These are complemented by a rounded bumper and rear lights with circular elements containing star-pattern graphics. Photographers were unable to peek inside, but previous shots suggest the interior will be similar to that of its crossover sibling. This means the sedan could be offered with three different screen configurations.

Multimedia Systems

The base variant will include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch multimedia system. The mid-level variant is the MBUX Superscreen, which adds a 14-inch display for the front passenger. However, the main attraction is expected to be the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, which stretches across the entire width of the dashboard.

Powertrains and Range

Details about the powertrains remain unknown, but the GLC EQ model provides a good indication of what to expect. It is equipped with a 94 kWh battery that powers an all-wheel-drive system with two motors producing 483 hp and 800 Nm of torque. This allows the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, reach a top speed of 210 km/h, and have a WLTP range of 673 km.

However, additional modifications are expected, including rear-wheel-drive models. The company previously stated that one of the versions will offer a range of 800 km, which will still be less than the 900 km of the BMW i3.

Awaiting the Debut

The exact presentation date for the C-Class EQ has not yet been announced, but the photographs suggest the premiere could happen soon. The manufacturer previously reported 16 new models this year, six of which will be electric.

The arrival of the electric C-Class EQ sedan is an important step for Mercedes-Benz in filling out its lineup of electric models in the business class segment. Competition with models like the BMW i3 is becoming increasingly fierce, and key arguments will be not only design and technology but also real-world range and performance figures. The success of this model could significantly influence the brand’s perception in the era of electric vehicles, especially among clients looking for an alternative to traditional C-Class sedans but with electric propulsion.
