Electricity promised for VW ID badge, but the new ID. Era 5S sedan did not receive this news

New hybrid sedan from SAIC-VW: ID. Era 5S

The joint venture SAIC-VW has introduced the new ID. Era 5S sedan. Despite the “ID” prefix, which in the global Volkswagen lineup usually denotes electric vehicles, this model is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Dimensions and design

The length of the ID. Era 5S is 4836 mm, with a wheelbase of 2766 mm. This is larger than the American version of the Jetta (4702 mm and 2686 mm respectively), and only slightly shorter than the discontinued Arteon (4862 mm) and its wheelbase (2837 mm).

VW designers claim they used the “golden ratio” (0.618) for proportions and drew inspiration from Bauhaus aesthetics. The body surfaces are executed cleanly, and the details are sharp, yet the overall profile looks conservative, even by Volkswagen standards.

Technologies and autonomy

Solid front and rear LED lights resemble those on the ID. Era 9X crossover but also integrate blue LEDs on the mirrors. They indicate that the vehicle’s complex cloud-based autonomous driving systems are activated. VW has confirmed that the ID. Era 5S will be its first sedan in the world capable of semi-autonomous driving in urban conditions.

The company has not yet released photos of the interior, but it is known that the ID. Era 5S will feature a cloud-based intelligent cockpit. Cloud technologies, as you may have noticed, are a recurring theme in this model.

Powertrain and efficiency

The plug-in hybrid powertrain promises an all-electric range of up to 160 km and an estimated combined range of over 2000 km under the CLTC cycle. Additionally, Volkswagen claims fuel consumption will be only 2.82 liters per 100 km even with a depleted battery.

Market launch

The first sedan of the ID. Era family will go on sale in China in the coming months. Production will be established locally at the facilities of the SAIC VW joint venture.

Interestingly, Volkswagen continues to expand its lineup in China, adapting global technologies to local needs. The use of the “ID” name for a hybrid rather than a pure electric vehicle may indicate the company’s desire to maintain brand recognition in a rapidly changing segment. At the same time, the emphasis on cloud technologies and semi-autonomous driving suggests that even in traditional sedans, VW is betting on software and intelligent systems, which is a key trend for the Chinese market.
