GM integrates Google Gemini into millions of cars
For many years, voice assistants in cars were clunky, frustrated users, and often could not understand even the simplest commands. However, with the development of artificial intelligence, the situation has changed dramatically. Owners of certain GM, Polestar, and Volvo models will be among the first to experience these changes.
GM has announced the rollout of Google Gemini to approximately 4 million vehicles in the US. These vehicles use an operating system based on Android Automotive, officially called “Google built-in.” The update covers Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models starting from the 2022 model year. The new system replaces the old Google Assistant, offering significantly expanded capabilities.
New communication capabilities
Instead of using simple commands, you can interact with Gemini more naturally, allowing for conversation. You can ask Gemini to create a playlist for a road trip on the go, find reviews for restaurants you are interested in, or even discuss ideas for a family vacation. The assistant can also help you prepare for an important conversation with your boss about a promotion.

Updates for Volvo and Polestar
Google Gemini was added to the Android Auto system for smartphones last year, but it took several months to integrate it directly into vehicles using “Google built-in” for their infotainment systems.
The new AI assistant will appear across the entire lineup of Polestar models sold in the US. Additionally, several Volvo models have received the update, including: C40, EC40, EX40, XC40, S60, V60, XC60, V90, S90, XC90, EX90, ES90, EX30, and EX60.
Although the author has not had the opportunity to test Gemini in cars with Android Automotive, he has interacted extensively with the assistant in his own car via Android Auto from his phone. It is a significant improvement over previous voice assistants. The system can even help learn a new language while driving. However, it is worth remembering that, like deep conversations with a passenger, discussing complex topics with an AI agent can be distracting from the road, so it is important to stay attentive.
The integration of Google Gemini in GM, Volvo, and Polestar vehicles marks a new stage in the development of automotive infotainment systems. This is not just an update of the voice assistant, but a transition to a more natural and intelligent interaction between the driver and the car. The ability to hold a conversation, rather than just executing commands, opens up broad opportunities for trip planning, information search, and even learning. However, as with any new technology, it is important to maintain a balance between convenience and safety, as complex conversations with AI can be just as distracting as talking to a passenger. This update undoubtedly enhances the comfort and functionality of the car but requires drivers to take a responsible approach to using new capabilities.
