Updates for the most powerful SUV
The Purosangue is already one of the fastest, most powerful, and undoubtedly the most striking SUVs on the market, but Ferrari never rests on its laurels. According to reports, the company is preparing an even sportier and more performance-oriented version of this car, which is a direct competitor to the Lamborghini Urus.
The heart remains the same
It is understood that the new version of the Purosangue will retain the current 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine. It is not yet clear whether this beast of a motor will receive any updates. Currently, the SUV delivers an incredible 715 horsepower and 716 Nm of torque.
Bloomberg reports that the new version will include changes to further improve its exceptional handling.
The scale of possible changes at this stage is unclear, but the cost of any such updates will obviously fall on the shoulders of clients, making the Purosangue even more expensive and increasing the Italian manufacturer’s margin. Production of this new model could begin in the second half of the year.
Faster than ever
The fact that Ferrari is working on an update for the Purosangue is not a huge surprise. It has been roughly three and a half years since its initial presentation, and competing SUVs from brands like Lamborghini, Bentley, and Porsche offer clients more than one variation.
Retaining the flagship V12 will undoubtedly be appreciated by Ferrari’s clientele. Prior to the Purosangue’s presentation in September 2022, it was widely expected that the SUV would debut with a 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, similar to the one installed in the Lamborghini Urus.
The model’s future
However, that did not happen, and Ferrari instead decided to install its flagship 6.5-liter V12. If the company wants to further broaden its appeal, adding a V8 would be a logical step, perhaps in a future, slightly more accessible version. While the V12 is adored by enthusiasts, it needs to be revved to extract maximum performance, whereas a turbocharged V8 would provide greater low-end torque that SUV buyers are accustomed to. Of course, this is merely speculation, and Maranello has not indicated an intention to do anything like this, so take it with a grain of healthy skepticism.
The high-performance SUV market remains fiercely competitive, and continuous improvement is key to leadership. Ferrari’s decision to focus on further refining the Purosangue’s already outstanding dynamics, rather than changing its heart, underscores the brand’s commitment to driving purity and the emotions that only a naturally aspirated engine can provide. It could also be a strategic move to differentiate its product from turbocharged competitors, offering buyers a unique, uncompromising character. The success of this updated version will show if there is enough market for old-world values in an era where even supercars are increasingly transitioning to hybrid and electric powertrains.
