Fiat 500 Hybrid: Return with a New Drivetrain
Fiat is preparing to produce the updated 500 Hybrid at the Mirafiori plant in Italy. Unlike the fully electric 500e, this model has received a mild-hybrid engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The decision to launch the hybrid is linked to the growing demand for such cars, despite the brand’s initial focus on electric vehicles.
Technical Features and Design
Externally, the 500 Hybrid is almost indistinguishable from the electric version. The main changes are a small front grille, an updated rear logo, and an integrated exhaust. Under the hood is a 1.0-liter FireFly engine with a 12-volt hybrid system, previously used in earlier generations of the 500 and Pandina. Power output is approximately 69 hp, and the drive is exclusively front-wheel.
“The return of the 500 Hybrid to Mirafiori is a promise kept. This plant is not just a production site; it is the heart of Fiat,” stated Fiat CEO Olivier François.
Production will start in November, with plans to produce 5,000 cars by the end of the year. The plant’s full capacity is up to 100,000 cars per year. The expected starting price is around €17,000, which is significantly cheaper than the electric version. Also, in November, a special “500 Torino” edition will be presented as a tribute to the city of Turin, where the plant is located.
Despite the change in the powertrain, the interior has remained almost untouched – the 10.25-inch multimedia screen and the 7-inch digital instrument cluster have been retained. The only noticeable update is the modified center tunnel for the manual gearbox. This step shows that Fiat is trying to balance innovation and tradition, offering consumers a familiar design combined with more accessible technology.
