Finish: Cameras in Ukraine Will Start Fining for Running a Red Light

Bad news for fans of the red light start — especially those who love to floor the pedal right after coffee at Sokar on Pechersk. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has decided to ruin the game: by the end of the year, traffic cameras will start “catching” not only speed violations (and occasionally — driving in bus lanes), but also running red lights.

This was announced by Anush Biloshitska from the Center for Infrastructure and Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to her, the system is already “learning” to distinguish when a driver decides to “sneak through” rather than stop, as a normal person would.

“The complexes are undergoing testing to detect running a red light. Already installed cameras will be able to operate in the new mode without the need for additional equipment,” says Biloshitska.

The camera won’t evaluate the sound of your exhaust, cool license plates, or dramatic drift at the intersection exit. It will simply record — and send a “letter of happiness” for 510 hryvnias. Of course, for the local motorsport elite, this fine is pocket change. But how many such “letters” can one receive in a day in central Kyiv if you don’t even brake for show?

But seriously, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, such enforcement should reduce the number of accidents at intersections. Because, unsurprisingly, it’s often these very “start heroes” who end up in the news headlines — though, this time, in the crime section.
