Towing Company Abused Its Position, Demanding Up to $15,000 for Car Return

Exposing an Illegal Towing Business

In Los Angeles, law enforcement uncovered a scheme of illegal vehicle towing where owners were demanded exorbitant sums for the return of their transport. A joint operation by the LAPD, the California Highway Patrol, and other agencies allowed for 145 vehicles to be returned to their owners.

The perpetrators operated according to a scheme: they either convinced drivers of the necessity of towing after minor incidents or even used fake accident witnesses. Some victims were presented with bills of up to $15,000 for the return of their own car.

“This was plain and simple auto theft,” stated LAPD Lieutenant Laurel Friedender at a press conference.

How the Perpetrators Operated

A representative of Legend Enterprise, the company suspected of these actions, stated that the organization itself had become a “victim” of dishonest tow truck drivers. Police remind: if a tow truck appears without your call – it is a potential scam.

“If there is no police officer on the scene who called the tow truck, you have the right to choose who will transport your car yourself,” explained CHP Lieutenant Joe Dominguez.

This story highlights the importance of being attentive to any offers of roadside assistance, especially when it comes to towing a vehicle. Police continue the investigation, as new charges against participants in the criminal scheme are possible.
