Volkswagen’s flagship SUV is being discontinued, betting on more affordable models

Volkswagen discontinues Touareg production

Volkswagen’s flagship SUV, the Touareg, will likely cease to exist in 2026. The company does not plan to provide a successor, focusing instead on more mass-market models such as the Tiguan and Tayron.

According to Autocar, this decision reflects a shift in the company’s priorities. Volkswagen has not yet officially confirmed this information, but such a step is consistent with the brand’s strategy to optimize its model range.

Launched in 2002 as a joint project with the Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg helped elevate Volkswagen’s status and was important for the group’s development.

What will replace the Touareg?

The premium segment is now left to Audi and Porsche, while Volkswagen will focus on mass-market models. For those seeking a larger SUV, the company offers the Tayron, which, although smaller in size, offers three rows of seats and modern technology.

The Terramont and Talagon will also remain in the lineup, becoming the brand’s new flagships. In North America, a similar transition has already taken place, where the Atlas replaced the Touareg back in 2017.

Other models at risk

In addition to the Touareg, Volkswagen is preparing to discontinue production of the electric ID.5 in 2027 due to low demand. The development of an electric minivan intended to replace the Touran has also been canceled, as the market continues to prefer SUVs.

The company’s resources are now directed towards key projects, such as the electric version of the Golf. These changes indicate a global reorientation of Volkswagen towards more profitable and popular models that align with current market trends.
