Stolen BMW Crashes into Tree, Driver Blames Theft on Mutants from “X-Men”
Leaving car keys inside the vehicle is always a bad idea. Especially when it comes to an attractive car, such as a BMW convertible. And it’s even worse to do so in a public parking lot.
One Florida man learned this the hard way after leaving his keys in plain sight in the cup holder. However, according to the detainee’s version, the theft occurred not due to his fault, but due to the intervention of mutants and aliens who allegedly teleported him into the car.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Calvin Johnson was arrested on Monday after he took an unlocked BMW from a park in Ormond Beach. The car’s owner had stepped away to walk the dog at the time.
Within just a few minutes, the car was completely destroyed. The suspect, according to police, accelerated it to 130 mph (about 209 km/h) on a nearby highway, then ran off the road and crashed into trees.
Crash Details and Driver’s Strange Claims
Body camera footage from police officers shows them arriving at the crash scene. The BMW lies crumpled on the roadside, smoke is coming from under the hood, and witnesses are trying to extinguish a small fire inside the cabin and in the surrounding bushes.
Johnson, bloodied and disoriented, was found at the scene. He insisted he was not a car thief. Instead, the man claimed he ended up in the BMW on the orders of the “X-Men.”
“I don’t know how I got in the car… I teleported or something,” Johnson told an officer while being handcuffed. He added that the “X-Men” ordered him to take the car, and the officers “saved” him from the aliens in his head.
A witness to the incident told police that the seatbelt likely prevented more tragic consequences from this strange adventure. “I had to cut him out of the seat,” he said.
Consequences and Warnings from Law Enforcement
Police emphasize the importance of locking vehicles even in scenic public places. After the crash, Johnson was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and later charged with vehicle theft and driving with a suspended license.
After being discharged from the medical facility, he will be transferred to the Volusia County Jail. That is, of course, unless the aliens come back for him. In that case, the outcome could be anything.
This case is the latest in a long list of strange incidents involving Florida residents, who often make the news for their unusual actions. Such stories not only cause surprise but also remind us of real problems, such as the importance of basic safety—locking cars and hiding keys. The story of “teleportation” and the “X-Men” will likely be the subject of a psychiatric examination, as it may indicate the detainee’s state of health at the time of the incident. Law enforcement, however, remains steadfast: whatever the reason, the illegal seizure of someone else’s property remains a crime.
