Ford F-150 Lightning surpasses Tesla Cybertruck in sales

New data shows that the electric Ford F-150 Lightning is selling better than the Tesla Cybertruck. In March, 2,598 Ford units were registered in the U.S. compared to 2,170 Cybertrucks. This may seem like a small difference, but for Ford, it’s an important victory, while for Tesla, it’s a setback.

The situation isn’t limited to just one month. In the first quarter of 2024, Ford sold 7,913 Lightnings, while Tesla sold only 7,126 Cybertrucks. This suggests that consumers prefer Ford’s proven model over Tesla’s experimental design.

Remember when Elon Musk claimed that demand for the Cybertruck was “off the charts”? Now it sounds like a distant past.

Why did the Cybertruck fail?

One of the main reasons is the sharp price increase. In 2019, Tesla promised a base version for $39,900, but now the cheapest option costs $69,990. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive model, which was supposed to cost $49,900, is now priced at $79,990.

Additionally, Tesla and Elon Musk have recently become subjects of political controversy, which may have also affected sales. Many buyers seem to prefer established brands over risky innovations.

Although the Cybertruck was meant to revolutionize the electric pickup market, reality has been less optimistic. Ford appears to better understand what buyers want, offering a balanced product at a more affordable price. This could be a signal for Tesla—sometimes excessive ambition and unfulfilled promises can harm even the most anticipated products.
