Ford has fulfilled its promise made at the end of last year. Back then, the Mustang GTD became the first American production car to conquer the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes. However, the company stated that the car was capable of more, as the track conditions were far from ideal, and promised to return for a new attempt.
“We are proud to be the first American automaker whose production car lapped the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we are not stopping there. We know the Mustang GTD can deliver an even better result. We will be back,” said CEO Jim Farley at the time. He kept his promise, and now the company has an even more impressive record.
During the first record, the time was 6:57.685, which allowed it to enter the top ten fastest production sports cars of all time. The new result of 6:52.072 propelled the model into the top five leaders. Ford claims this is the fourth-best time among production sports cars on this track, although the incredible Mercedes-AMG One with a time of 6:35.18 might not be counted. This is understandable, as even the $350,000 GTD cannot compete with a hypercar that has a power unit inherited from Formula 1 race cars, not to mention its significantly higher price.
Regardless of its ranking position, this result is truly impressive. How did Ford manage to gain so much time on the world’s most terrifying and difficult track? Certainly, better conditions played a role. Furthermore, the company used the experience gained during the first record attempt. This means fine-tuning all parameters for the specific track: the power profile, aerodynamics, ABS, and other systems. One thing is for sure: when customers receive these cars, they will be very pleased with their purchase.
