The Mustang GTD is an incredible car, but its limited production run and supercar-level price make it unattainable for most. The new Mustang Dark Horse SC becomes a lifeline, offering some of the best GTD technologies for significantly more acceptable money.
The base powertrain is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, borrowed from the GTD, which works exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While the GTD develops 815 horsepower, the final power figures for the SC have not yet been announced. It is assumed they will be somewhat more modest.
Development was carried out in parallel with the GTD and GT3 models on tracks such as Sebring and Virginia International Raceway. This process directly influenced the technical content of the Dark Horse SC.
The result of the joint work includes components such as Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, forged suspension arms, a magnesium strut tower brace, and an improved version of MagneRide dampers.
Track Pack
The optional Track Pack brings with it carbon fiber wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, and revised aerodynamics. The combination of a ducktail spoiler and rear wing provides 620 pounds of downforce on the rear axle at a speed of 180 miles per hour, while the vented aluminum hood improves cooling and front-end balance. Additionally, this pack removes about 150 pounds from the car’s curb weight.
An Attainable GTD
Inside, the Dark Horse SC received a sporty multifunction steering wheel with a flat bottom from the GTD, as well as Alcantara and carbon fiber trim. Optional Recaro seats are available, and the Track Pack completely removes the rear seat row, replacing it with a shelf for storing track gear.
Engineers also integrated a traction control system with five adjustable levels and full deactivation, allowing drivers to adapt the car’s behavior to their skill level and road conditions.
Market Expectations
There is no official price information yet. However, considering that the base Mustang Dark Horse with a 5.0-liter engine starts at $64 thousand, it can be expected that the SC version with some options will easily cross the $100 thousand mark. But this is still much more accessible than the cost of the GTD.
The appearance of the Dark Horse SC clearly demonstrates Ford’s strategy of making high-tech developments from racing and flagship models more accessible to a wider circle of enthusiasts. This is not just a more powerful engine, but a comprehensive rethinking of suspension, brakes, and aerodynamics, making the car ready for serious track loads straight from the dealer’s showroom. This approach could significantly change the market for affordable high-performance cars, offering a level of technical sophistication that was previously the prerogative of significantly more expensive machines.
