Problems with Ford Transit Trail tires lead to a class-action lawsuit
The Ford Transit Trail, marketed as a more off-road-capable version of the standard van, has found itself in a difficult situation. Due to issues with tire rubbing against the wheel arches, the company issued a recall, replacing the original 30.5-inch tires with smaller 28.5-inch ones. However, owners argue that this reduces the vehicle’s off-road capability and its value.
The lawsuit, filed in Delaware, claims that Ford failed to test the model’s compatibility with larger tires before launch. Replacing them with smaller ones makes the Transit Trail nearly identical to the base version, contradicting marketing promises.
“While Ford promised off-road vehicles suitable for camping and adventures, the recall strips the Transit Trail of its main advantage — large tires and increased ground clearance,” the document states.
Owners seek alternatives
Some users, such as Michelle Provo, have spent thousands of dollars on suspension modifications and protective measures to retain the ability to use the original tires. Another owner, Susan Cherva, turned to a tuning company to rework the wheel arch architecture.
The lawsuit covers all Transit Trail owners in the U.S. for the 2023–2024 model years. It demands a jury trial, as the plaintiffs believe Ford failed to meet its obligations regarding the vehicle’s quality and performance.
This story demonstrates how technical flaws can escalate into serious legal consequences for automakers. Drivers who expected the Transit Trail’s off-road capabilities now face a choice: either accept reduced performance or invest in costly modifications. Such cases may impact consumer trust in new models, especially in niches where operational qualities are crucial.
