Consideration of Renaming Streets in Honor of Shelby
The Ford company considered the possibility of changing the names of two streets on its campus in Dearborn, which bear the name of legendary automotive designer Carroll Shelby. Instead of Carroll Shelby Way East and Carroll Shelby Way West, it was proposed to use the names of the brand’s modern car models.
Proposals for New Names and the Company’s Reaction
Internal plans envisioned renaming them to Raptor Way and Navigator Avenue. This sparked a wave of discussions, as Carroll Shelby is a key figure in Ford’s history, responsible for creating iconic sports cars. Later, Ford called this information “inaccurate” and stated that renaming was only considered but not approved. In an official statement, the company confirmed:
Carroll Shelby Way is not changing.
Thus, Shelby’s name will remain on the campus streets.
Large-Scale Campus Reconstruction
This situation occurred against the backdrop of a large-scale modernization of the Ford campus. The former Product Development Center is being transformed into a modern hub with laboratories, offices, and other facilities. The work will continue until 2029. As part of this update, some other streets will indeed receive new names related to the company’s products, for example, Village Road will become Mustang Alley, and South Pond Road — Bronco Bend.

Branding Logic and Historical Legacy
As the company explained, the goal of such changes is to create a closer connection between employees’ workplaces and the products they work on. This is meant to inspire engineers. However, the very idea of replacing Shelby’s name was perceived by many as ingratitude towards his legacy. When the streets were named in 2012, Ford stated that it was a daily reminder to engineers of Shelby’s influence and spirit.

The Unbreakable Bond Between Ford and Shelby
Carroll Shelby’s contribution to the world of automobiles and Ford’s success is hard to overestimate. He was the creator of cars like the Cobra, a key figure in the GT40 program, and also created high-performance versions of the Mustang that became legends. His influence remained significant even after temporarily working with competitor Chrysler.
Modern Context and Ford’s Own Brands
This case is not the only one where Ford seemed to be trying to slightly distance itself from the Shelby name. The last Mustang Shelby GT500 produced by Ford rolled off the assembly line after the 2022 model year. Since then, the brand has been actively developing its own high-performance lineups, such as Dark Horse, Dark Horse SC, and GTD, creating a new era of powerful cars under its own banner. This indicates the constant evolution of the brand, which balances between honoring historical heritage and investing in its own future. The preservation of Shelby’s name on the campus streets, despite all the discussions, confirms that this legacy remains an important part of the company’s identity, even as it moves forward.
