Expanding Access to Wireless Driving Technology
Ford continues to implement its “wireless” driving technology, demonstrating how features that were previously available only for premium models are now becoming part of regular cars. BlueCruise is now targeted at the brand’s most affordable SUVs in Europe, allowing buyers to access advanced driver assistance without having to overpay.
Availability for Various Models
In addition to the Puma and the fully electric Puma Gen-E, the system will also be offered for the compact Kuga SUV and the mid-size Ranger PHEV pickup as part of the optional Driver Assistance Pack.
Implementation History in Europe
BlueCruise debuted in Europe with the Mustang Mach-E in 2023, gradually spreading from the UK to 16 countries on the continent.
Future Plans and Availability
Starting in the spring of 2026, Ford’s small and compact SUVs, as well as its mid-size pickups, will also receive the hands-free driving system. This leaves only the Volkswagen-based electric Capri and Explorer models, the Transit/Tourneo series, and the ICE Mustang without access to this technology.
System Operation Principle
BlueCruise, based on Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel while remaining focused on the road. The system controls acceleration, braking, and steering, using cameras and sensors to monitor traffic, lane markings, as well as the driver’s gaze and head position to ensure attentiveness.
Usage Geography
In Europe, BlueCruise can be activated on over 135,000 km (84,000 miles) of highways marked as “Blue Zones.” For example, it can be used for a journey from Stockholm to Rome, covering 2,000 km (1,500 miles) through six countries with a total hands-free driving time of about 25 hours.
Global Statistics
Ford and Lincoln owners worldwide have covered over 888 million km (552 million miles) using vehicles equipped with BlueCruise. However, most of these trips were likely made in North America.
Implementation Details
The company reports that the technology will be available on “selected new models” of the Puma, Puma Gen-E, Kuga, and Ranger PHEV, starting in the spring of 2026. Subscription options and prices for the Driver Assistance Pack will be announced closer to that date.
Current European Market
BlueCruise is currently available in selected European markets, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
