The world of Formula 1 is once again discussing the possibility of returning the legendary V8 engines. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that the transition could happen as early as 2029. This comes ten years after the switch to turbocharged hybrid V6s, which, although more efficient, have proven significantly more expensive to produce and maintain.
The current 1.6-liter engines cost over $2 million per unit, significantly increasing team expenses. A return to V8 could not only reduce costs but also restore the characteristic roar that made the races so exciting.

“For us, V8 is a reality. I am very optimistic, the teams also realize that this is the right path. We need to do this as soon as possible,” Ben Sulayem stated.
He also emphasized that modern power units are too complex and expensive to develop, with their cost reaching $1.8–2.1 million. Instead, the new V8s are likely to use synthetic fuel and hybrid technologies to remain relevant in modern conditions.
Why This is Important
Many automakers still use V8s in their models, so such a move could bring Formula 1 closer to production cars. Although some suggest returning to even more powerful V10s, V8s are considered a more practical option due to their lower weight and simpler design.
If the transition happens, it could become a compromise between tradition and innovation. The engines will remain more environmentally friendly thanks to the use of sustainable fuel, while also providing the races with more emotion and sonic drive.
