The Return of a Legendary Name
Jaguar Land Rover is reviving the familiar name Freelander, but now it will appear with a completely new concept and emblem. This model returns as a separate sub-brand in China in the form of a boxy SUV, developed jointly with the Chery company. The official premiere is still ahead, however, a new series of detailed renders, created based on leaked crash test photos, allows for an early assessment of the future novelty.
What is Known About the New Freelander
From Prototypes to First Shots
Until last week, the new Freelander could only be seen on heavily camouflaged prototypes, which hid most of the design details. The situation changed after a blurred teaser image appeared, and then photos of the car during crash tests, providing a clearer idea of its shape and proportions.
Based on these images, Sugar Design created these renders for the new model. It does not resemble anything in the current JLR lineup, but that is certainly not a bad thing. In the image next to the original Freelander, it is obvious that the automaker’s designers carefully studied the past and tried to translate this classic look into the modern era.
Design: A Modern Interpretation of a Classic
Undoubtedly, the most striking element of the front is the square headlights, each framed by LED daytime running lights. Between them is the large Freelander name, and the lower part is finished with a black bumper. The absence of a traditional upper grille may seem strange, but overall, the front of the new Freelander looks quite restrained.

The side view may be controversial. Like the original Freelander, the new model has a sloping roofline, black wheel arch cladding, and a high stance. The rear is equipped with a pair of compact taillights and a massive Freelander logo on the tailgate.

Technical Basis and Market
Jaguar Land Rover plans to relaunch Freelander as a separate sub-brand specifically in the Chinese market, where both fully electric and hybrid variants will be available. Key technical specifications remain a mystery for now, but hybrid versions are expected to use the T1X platform from Chery, on which several Jaecoo, Omoda, and Chery models for global markets are already built.

The return of the Freelander name as a separate brand focused on one of the world’s largest automotive markets indicates a deep transformation in Jaguar Land Rover’s strategy. Cooperation with Chery allows not only to reduce development costs but also to quickly adapt to the specific demands of Chinese consumers, especially regarding electrification. This step could become a testing ground for the further global expansion of the Freelander brand if the model succeeds. The design, combining retro elements with modern trends, could be the key to attracting both nostalgic buyers and a new audience.
