General Motors may swap Hyundai pickups for electric vans en

The CEOs of General Motors and Hyundai announced that they are focused on joint product development, manufacturing, and clean energy technologies in the past autumn. The companies were not detailed, but with the emergence of reports in January, it became apparent that Hyundai could supply GM with electric trucks.

Fast forward and pieces are starting to fall into place as reported by the publication, Hyundai may provide GM with two electric commercial trucks. In response, GM may give Hyundai a pickup, which will be based on the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

Interestingly, this makes us wonder if this pickup could serve as a replacement for Santa Cruz. The company sold only 32,033 units in the US last year, and the model is available from $30,200, which is $3,295 less.

Additionally, it is reported that Hyundai intends to offer its version of the GMC Sierra. However, GM “has not made such an offer,” and this could be a big question.

One of the trucks is believed to be based on the Hyundai ST1 and is reported to be imported from South Korea. However, the manufacturer is considering starting production in North America by 2028. This could happen at an existing plant, a contract manufacturer, or a completely new enterprise. The latter will gradually gain momentum but could have an annual capacity of more than 100,000 units by 2032.

The report also states that it is expected that GM will soon phase out the aging Chevrolet Express and trucks, so electric vehicles from Hyundai could become their replacements. However, the threat of tariffs could be significant.

Besides vehicles for the United States, the companies are reportedly discussing the possibility of Hyundai providing GM with compact crossovers for Brazil. Apparently, this should be based on, which is manufactured in the country.

It is also said that Hyundai is considering deals beyond vehicles and includes joint procurement and development of everything from batteries to computer chips.
