General Motors and Hyundai Join Forces to Create Five Joint Vehicles

Joint GM and Hyundai Project

General Motors and Hyundai have officially announced the joint development of five new vehicles. Most of them are intended for the markets of Central and South America, while only one electric vehicle – a commercial van – is planned for North America.

Among the planned models are a compact car, a crossover, a compact pickup truck, and a mid-size pickup truck. The latter will be developed primarily by GM, while Hyundai will take the lead in creating the other models. All of them will have the capability to use both traditional internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrains.

“The strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to provide customers with high-quality and technologically advanced vehicles,” said Hyundai CEO José Muñoz.

Prospects for Collaboration

If the plans are successfully implemented, the companies will be able to sell over 800,000 jointly developed vehicles annually. Although the models will share a common technical base, each brand will give them a unique exterior and interior design.

Development has already begun, and the first vehicles for the Latin American markets will appear in 2028. The electric van for North America is also planned to be released by the end of 2028.

“Collaborating will allow us to provide customers with more options faster and cheaper,” noted GM Senior Vice President Shilpan Amin.

In addition to developing new models, the companies plan to collaborate in the areas of logistics, material supply, and the production of greener steel. This will help optimize costs and accelerate the launch of new products to the market.

For GM, this collaboration is particularly important in the context of commercial electric vehicles – after the failure with the BrightDrop division, the company is looking for a reliable partner to develop this direction. Hyundai, in turn, gains access to GM’s experience in working with American markets and the opportunity to expand its model range through joint projects.
