Genesis GV90 Challenges BMW and Cadillac with Electric Vehicle Power

Breaking into the premium SUV market is not a task for the faint of heart, especially when it is dominated by giants like Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Bentley. However, Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai Motor Group, is confident it has every chance to make a statement. And the company isn’t just making empty promises – it is creating a truly large-scale product.

The brightest proof of this will be the GV90 – the brand’s most ambitious electric SUV to date. Recent spy photos indicate that the model is almost ready to hit the market. The camouflage doesn’t hide everything, so it’s already possible to get a certain idea of the car.

Some might recognize the GV90 as the Neolun concept shown at the New York Auto Show. Unlike many show cars that change significantly before production, this vehicle has retained the main features of the prototype.

The crossover’s dimensions exceed five meters in length, and it doesn’t try to hide it. The front is adorned with double LED strips framing a massive shield-shaped grille. The light elements continue along the edge of the hood to the front doors. The lower part of the bumper is decorated with a chrome pattern, and additional shiny accents run along the sills and wrap around the rear.

The body design is devoid of sharp lines and unnecessary details – its advantages lie in its clean surfaces and impressive presence. Certain versions of the GV90 will get rear-hinged rear doors, akin to a Rolls-Royce, and the two-tier light graphics at the front will be echoed in the rear lights.

Luxury in the Cabin

The GV90’s interior is a true oasis of comfort. Spy shots show four individual seats with massage function, and the space between the rear seats is occupied by a massive center console with illuminated cup holders, wireless charging, and a large touch screen.

The dashboard will feature a massive OLED screen stretching from door to door, wireless smartphone integration, and numerous convenient features, allowing it to compete with Mercedes. The list of options includes infrared heating and an electrochromic roof capable of adjusting the transparency of individual sections. A full suite of Level 2 partial autonomy systems is also expected.

It was initially assumed that the GV90 would use the E-GMP platform, like the Ioniq 5 or Kia EV9, but recent data suggests the development of a new eM architecture. This 800-volt platform will allow the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes when connected to a 350-kilowatt charger.

All-wheel drive will be standard, with electric motors on both axles. Standard versions will produce around 500 hp, while top modifications will show even higher figures. The battery capacity will be 99.8 kWh, providing a range of over 480 km (300 miles). Variants with larger batteries may appear in the future.

V2G and V2L technologies will turn the crossover into a mobile power station for homes and devices. Furthermore, the GV90 will get electronically controlled dampers and a torque vectoring system for improved handling.

Competitors and Release Date

Genesis is targeting the top of the premium electric vehicle market, where the GV90 will face competitors such as the Mercedes EQS SUV, BMW iX, Cadillac Escalade IQ, Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, and Range Rover Electric.

The presentation, expected this year, might not happen until late 2026. Production will begin at a specialized Hyundai plant in Ulsan, South Korea.
