Genesis May Revive This Sedan, Even Though Everyone Thought Its Story Was Over

Genesis G70 Update for the Korean Market

Several years have passed since the Kia Stinger quietly disappeared from the market, and for a while, it seemed the Genesis G70 would follow in its footsteps. As the market changed and production cycles shortened, many expected this rear-wheel-drive sports sedan to cease existence along with its “relative.”

Now, new reports from South Korea suggest the G70 may last in the market longer than initially expected.

Certification of the Updated Model

According to local sources, Genesis recently completed emissions and noise level certification for an updated version of the G70 in the domestic market. If this information is accurate, it will be the most significant update to the car since its facelift at the end of 2020.

Minor Update or Serious Work?

No official statements regarding changes to the exterior design have been made, and frankly, expectations are low. In an ideal world, the updated G70 would borrow a few details from the recent G80 Wingback concept. These could include narrower, sharper dual headlights and a radiator grille that looks less bulky. Whether these ideas will be implemented remains unknown for now.

A report from the Korean publication TopRider also claims the updated G70 required a slight weight increase to comply with strengthened collision safety standards. Additionally, Genesis is reportedly making adjustments to the engine lineup, primarily focusing on improving efficiency.

Expected Powertrain Changes

Under the hood, the updated G70 is expected to retain its current engine range. This includes a 304-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 370-horsepower 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. The familiar eight-speed automatic transmission is also likely to remain, along with the choice between rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The Model’s Future on the Global Market

Of course, the fact that the Genesis G70 may continue its life in South Korea does not mean it will remain on sale in other regions. CarScoops has reached out to Genesis to confirm the accuracy of the reported updates and to find out if this updated model could be offered, for example, in the United States.

This information suggests the manufacturer may prioritize markets where regulatory requirements or demand make extending the life cycle of a particular model feasible. Approaches to global product strategy often differ, and decisions for one region are not always copied to others. The further fate of the G70 outside Korea remains a question, the answer to which only time and official company statements can provide.
