Bugatti’s Hybrid System Weighs Less Than Just One of Their Former V16 Engines

Bugatti Unveils New Hybrid Engine for the Tourbillon

Bugatti has released a new video about the development of its upcoming Tourbillon hypercar. In it, CEO Mate Rimac discussed the key features of the hybrid powertrain with a V16 engine and electric components.

Innovations in Design

The Tourbillon’s hybrid system not only did not increase the car’s weight but actually made it lighter. By abandoning turbos and using an original T-shaped battery design, they managed to achieve a total weight of just 430 kg for the entire powertrain.

This system is not just lighter – it’s more powerful. 1775 horsepower at 9000 rpm versus 1470 hp in the Chiron.

In addition to its impressive power, the Tourbillon is capable of traveling up to 60 km on electric power alone. However, it is unlikely that this feature will be used frequently by the owners of such a car.

The developers faced serious challenges in packaging the front trunk, where they placed two electric motors, the battery cooling system, and cargo space. Upcoming videos in the series will likely reveal more technical details of this unique development.

Despite the general trend towards electrification, Bugatti has managed to create a hybrid that not only surpasses previous models in performance but also retains the same “emotionality” characteristic of internal combustion engine cars. The approach to weight reduction is particularly impressive – hybrid systems usually increase it significantly, as happened, for example, with the new BMW models.
