Hybrid cars are trending, but Hyundai overheats even for itself

Hyundai has announced the recall of nearly 55,000 Elantra hybrid sedans due to an overheating issue with the power control unit. The recall affects 2024-2026 model years.

Reason for Recall and Scope of the Problem

The manufacturer is recalling 54,337 vehicles due to the risk of overheating of the Hybrid Power Control Unit (HPCU). According to data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem lies in a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, which can overheat under high electrical loads. This typically results in the car not starting or entering a fail-safe mode. However, it is noted that “in certain instances, the HPCU may overheat, leading to localized thermal damage to the unit and internal components.”

Timeline of Events and Investigation

Hyundai first learned of the issue in December 2024 and began investigating a “distressed vehicle” in early 2025. After several teardowns, the company identified a consistent failure point in the metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor.

The investigation showed that the vehicle’s software “may not provide sufficient cooling to the HPCU unit, leading to overheating.” To resolve the issue, owners will be asked to visit dealers for an HPCU software update.

Incident Statistics and Next Steps

Owner notifications are expected in mid-July. Currently, Hyundai is aware of four incidents related to this issue. Only one of these involved a fire, but no accidents or injuries have been reported.

This recall serves as a reminder that even modern hybrid technologies can have flaws that require prompt correction. Although the number of incidents is relatively small, the potential fire risk makes such measures necessary. Owners of affected vehicles should pay close attention to notifications from the manufacturer and not delay visiting a service center. A software update is typically a quick and free way to fix the problem and ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.
