GMC Model Lineup Updates
GMC is preparing updates for its key models—the full-size Sierra pickup and the Yukon SUV. The new version of the Sierra is expected to appear in 2027, and the Yukon in 2029. Both models will for the first time receive hybrid powertrains with plug-in charging capability. The company is also working on updates for the Arcadia, Hummer, and Canyon.
Full-size pickups and SUVs remain the foundation of GMC’s business, and demand for them is not decreasing. The company is not abandoning internal combustion engines but is adding hybrid options to its lineup. This seems like a reasonable step, given the declining interest in fully electric vehicles due to changes in government support programs.
Production Plans and New Technologies
According to GM CEO Mary Barra, Sierra production will be expanded at the plant in Michigan. The updated models are expected to receive not only new powertrains but also updated design and technologies. The electric version, the Sierra EV, could also be modernized by 2028 to match the style of conventional pickups.
Other GMC models are also awaiting changes. The Hummer EV, which has been in production since 2021, may receive an update in 2028. The Canyon is expecting a facelift in 2029, and the Terrain—no earlier than 2028–2029. The Savana model, which has been in production since 1996, will remain in production at least until 2026.
Sales and Market Strategy
GMC is showing sales growth, particularly in the full-size vehicle segment. In the first half of 2025, the company sold 315,906 vehicles, which is 11% more than a year earlier. The leader was the Sierra with 166,409 units sold, and the Yukon showed a 22% growth. The only decline was observed for the compact SUV Terrain.
GMC’s strategy, focused on more premium models compared to Ford or Chevrolet, is proving itself. Against the backdrop of the overall market, where demand for electric vehicles has somewhat decreased, hybrid solutions could become a good compromise for buyers who are not ready to fully switch to electric vehicles. The company continues to balance between traditional technologies and innovations, allowing it to maintain a strong position in its segment.
