According to reports, General Motors has revived plans to create a full-fledged GMC Jimmy off-roader with a body-on-frame construction.
A Second Chance for GM
When Chevrolet brought the Blazer name back to the market, it seemed the company completely missed the obvious target. Instead of making the Blazer similar to the original—a rugged off-roader—it became (and remains) a soft crossover designed for malls, not for off-road trails. Now GM might have a second chance by reviving the GMC Jimmy as a competitor to the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, and, according to rumors, it could get a V8 engine.
According to GM Authority, General Motors has revived plans for a new body-on-frame GMC Jimmy after the project was frozen several years ago. The initial idea was reportedly canceled because GM invested billions in electric vehicles and autonomous driving, and tightening fuel economy standards made creating a “consumer” off-roader difficult to justify.
Changing Market Conditions
The situation has now changed. GM’s investments in electrification and autonomous technologies have not yielded the expected results, emission and fuel economy standards have become less stringent, and suddenly a rugged mid-size SUV no longer looks so risky.
The proposed Jimmy is reportedly based on the same general architecture as the current GMC Canyon, giving GMC a true SUV off-roader that will slot below the Acadia and above the Terrain. More importantly, this will finally give GMC an answer to vehicles like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota 4Runner.

The Advantage of a V8 Engine
Perhaps the most important part of this new report is that the Jimmy could receive a V8 engine. This is a big deal, considering that the 4Runner and Bronco do not offer such a powertrain. The Wrangler has a V8, but only in the top-of-the-line model. Even the potentially related GMC Canyon or Chevrolet Colorado are not available with a V8. Installing such an engine in the Jimmy would immediately give this model more authority.
It is also reported that GM is improving its TurboMax four-cylinder engine and preparing a new generation of small-displacement V8 engines, so both powertrains could theoretically end up under the hood of the Jimmy.
Caveats and Prospects
Of course, the main caveat remains. GM has not confirmed anything, there are no timelines, and every detail comes from anonymous sources. But if this rumor turns into reality, GMC could finally get the SUV that should have been built years ago.

The return of the Jimmy, especially in such a configuration, could significantly revitalize the mid-size off-road SUV segment, which has become an arena of fierce competition in recent years. Having a unique offering, such as a V8 engine in this class, could be a significant competitive advantage for GMC. The success of models like the Ford Bronco has shown that demand for vehicles with authentic off-road character remains high, even despite the general trend towards electrification and downsizing of engines. GM’s decision, if implemented, would demonstrate the company’s flexibility and its ability to respond to changes in market conditions and consumer preferences.
