Trump’s EPA Head Declares War on Start-Stop Technology

New EPA Head Wants to Ban Start/Stop Technology

The new head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lee Zeldin, opposes start/stop technology, which automatically shuts off the engine during idling, such as at a traffic light. This system, which has been in use for over 20 years, reduces fuel consumption by 4-8.7% and lowers CO₂ emissions. However, Zeldin calls it a “participation trophy for climate initiatives.”

Start/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy. EPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it.

Experts point out that start/stop technology has proven its effectiveness in real-world conditions—just 8 seconds of idling is enough to save fuel. Despite this, some drivers complain about discomfort, especially when the system temporarily turns off the air conditioning.

Why Does This Matter?

The EPA was created to protect the environment, but recent statements from its leadership raise doubts about the agency’s priorities. Instead of focusing on real environmental threats, such as industrial emissions or inefficient transportation systems, the EPA appears intent on rolling back proven solutions. This could lead to increased emissions without a clear alternative to compensate for the loss in efficiency.
