Testing the Updated Honda Pilot
Honda is conducting road tests of the Pilot SUV in the United States. The prototype has camouflage on the bumpers and a new, more massive radiator grille. The first hybrid version is expected to appear in the 2028 model year.
Why the Update is Necessary
The fourth-generation Pilot debuted in 2022, but a sales decline is already being observed in 2025, and experts are criticizing the design and interior quality. This has become the reason for starting the model’s modernization.
External Changes
Photographers captured a prototype with heavy camouflage on the front. The masking covers the front and rear bumpers, but the most attention is paid to the radiator grille, which will become more massive and acquire an off-road style.
Researcher Baldauf notes that the headlight shape will remain unchanged, but minor adjustments in the LED graphics are possible. Furthermore, the prototype is equipped with wheels that differ from those available in the Honda configurator.
Interior Updates
Through the window, it is visible that the model will get a larger digital instrument panel, which will likely become standard for the entire lineup. An update of the multimedia system is also expected – possibly a 12-inch or larger screen, which will bring the Pilot closer to competitors’ offerings.
Release Timeline
Since Honda has not yet presented the Pilot for the 2026 model year, it is likely that this is the version we see in the photos. However, it is more probable that the updates will debut for the 2027 model year, meaning in the summer or fall of 2026.

Hybrid Powertrain
The biggest change for the Pilot will be the appearance of a hybrid version. Currently, the SUV is equipped with only one engine – a 3.5-liter V6 with 285 hp, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Many competitors already offer hybrid variants that consume less fuel.
Honda has already confirmed plans to introduce a new hybrid powertrain for large models, which will provide improved performance, fuel efficiency, and towing capability.
The question remains open: will the current generation Pilot receive the hybrid engine, or will we have to wait for the fifth generation? There is an opinion that Honda cannot afford to wait until 2028-2029 to electrify this model.
TrailSport Off-Road Version
The updated Pilot version is expected to retain the TrailSport off-road variant, as buyers are increasingly interested in models that combine the appearance and capabilities of classic off-road vehicles.
Given the growing competition in the SUV market, updating the Pilot could be key to maintaining Honda’s position. The introduction of hybrid technologies will not only improve environmental indicators but also meet the needs of modern buyers, who are increasingly looking for economical and efficient solutions. Furthermore, updating the design and interior will help the model compete with popular crossovers like the Ford Explorer, which is also actively being improved.
