Luxury Honda RA272 Models by Amalgam
On October 24, 1965, Richie Ginther at the wheel of the Honda RA272 won the Mexican Grand Prix, bringing the Japanese brand its first victory in Formula 1. To mark the 60th anniversary of this event, Amalgam Collection has released a limited series of scale models of the RA272 in two versions. The presentation will take place during The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering event as part of Monterey Car Week.
The 1:8 model will cost buyers $28,995, but only 30 units will be produced. For those looking for a more affordable option, a 1:18 version is offered for $1,735 (300 copies). Both models come with a certificate of authenticity, a booklet signed by HRC President Koji Watanabe, and a special case.
Production Details
For maximum accuracy, Amalgam used 3D scanning of the actual race car and analysis of hundreds of historical photographs. The 1:8 model consists of over 1,600 individual parts and takes 450 hours to create. The paint was matched to archival samples to accurately reproduce the original color of the RA272.
“This RA272 model is not just a tribute, but an opportunity to own a piece of our history,” noted Koji Watanabe.
Interestingly, Honda began work on the RA272 even before the release of its first production cars, being exclusively a motorcycle manufacturer at the time. Engineers developed a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 with 230 horsepower that revved up to 12,000 rpm. Amalgam recreated this engine in detail, openly displaying it at the rear of the model.
Today, the original RA272 is considered not only a symbol of Honda’s early successes in motorsport but also an important milestone in Formula 1 history. Its victory in Mexico opened a new era for Asian manufacturers in world championships. The limited series of models by Amalgam allows collectors to touch this legend, albeit at a very high price.
