Honda Created a Modern Version of the CR-X Based on the Integra

Honda Integra Targa Concept at the Guangzhou Auto Show

The GAC Honda joint venture presented a unique concept car based on the Integra model, which is locally built on the Civic platform, at the auto show in Guangzhou, China. This prototype has been transformed into a two-door coupe with a removable targa top, instantly evoking associations with the classic Honda CR-X of the 1990s.

Key Features of the Concept

The new hybrid Prelude coupe remains the center of attention in Honda’s lineup, but at the Guangzhou Auto Show, it is this concept that attracts particular interest. It is the result of a modification of the Integra hatchback, which is produced for the Chinese market by the GAC Honda joint venture as an alternative to the Civic from Dongfeng Honda.

Design and Construction

The front and rear of the Integra Targa remained almost unchanged, but the central section underwent radical alterations. The roof has been completely removed, the rear doors have been eliminated, and the front doors have been made longer and frameless. To increase body rigidity, the B-pillar has been moved back and thickened, creating a protected space around the rear of the cabin.

The concept is mounted on white multi-spoke alloy wheels that harmonize with the main body color, and the red mirror caps refer to a special anniversary version of the Integra presented last year.

Interior and Technical Details

Inside, the standard five-seat layout has been replaced by a 2+2 configuration, emphasizing the model’s sporty character. The open roof provides unlimited headroom for front passengers, although comfort in the rear seats remains questionable. Red accents on the dashboard add brightness to the interior.

Thanks to photos published on social media, it became known that the concept is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, indicating the use of a 1.5-liter VTEC turbocharged engine producing about 180 hp. The hybrid version of the Integra does not offer a manual transmission, so this prototype likely runs solely on gasoline.

Future of the Concept

GAC Honda has not provided official details about the concept, indicating its purely exhibition nature. The production of similar two-door models in China is risky due to limited demand for coupes and convertibles. Thus, the Integra Targa remains a demonstration of engineering capabilities, not a precursor to a production model.

Although the concept revives the spirit of models like the CR-X del Sol, its proportions look somewhat unusual and experimental. The lack of clear plans for mass production makes it an interesting but impractical solution for the modern market.
