Someone created a Toyota GT86 roadster with a mid-engine layout

Unconventional Toyota MR2 in GT86 style

This unusual project is based on the third-generation MR2 Spyder. The foundation is a 2000 model, but only the doors, windshield, and folding roof remain from the original. The rest of the body elements have been completely replaced.

Modification details

The front and rear sections of the car are borrowed from the first-generation GT86 but feature LED lighting. However, due to the differing proportions of the models, custom parts such as the hood, fenders, and trunk had to be made from fiberglass. The body is painted in bright Ferrari Rosso Corsa 322, and the wheels have been replaced with 18-inch Work rims.

The rear ventilation vents, intended for engine cooling, are completely covered by new panels, which may cause overheating issues.

Technical features

Under the hood remains the 1.8-liter naturally aspirated 1ZZ-FE engine producing 138 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Updates include a titanium exhaust system, adjustable Tein Flex Z suspension, and improved brakes.

The car is being offered at auction for 2.2 million yen (~$15,100). The mileage is 76,829 km, and the body is in good condition, though there are minor paint and roof damages. The bidding deadline is May 31.

This project demonstrates how deeply a car’s design can be altered but also raises questions about the practicality of such modifications. In particular, doubts arise about the cooling system’s efficiency after such extensive bodywork. However, for fans of unconventional cars, this MR2/GT86 could be a real find.
