Hyundai is preparing a major premiere in New York but keeps it secret

Hyundai is preparing a major world premiere in New York

At the New York Auto Show, which promises to be one of the largest this year, Hyundai has announced a “major world premiere” scheduled for April 1. The importance of the event is underscored by the fact that Hyundai Motor CEO Jose Munoz and Hyundai Motor North America CEO Randy Parker, as well as the company’s key designers, will be present at the presentation.

The automaker is keeping specific details secret, limiting itself to cryptic teaser images and videos depicting a cubic stone levitating over a remote landscape. This has sparked speculation about a possible concept car series, similar to last year’s Crater, however, the most likely candidate for the premiere is the fully updated Hyundai Tucson.

Expected updated Tucson and other models

Despite the secrecy of the official teaser, the leading candidate for the debut is considered to be the new generation Tucson, as confirmed by recent spy photos. The model is expected to inherit some features of the Crater concept, get a fully enclosed grille framed by sleek daytime running lights that flow into large headlights. The design will also include streamlined body shapes, flush door handles, and pronounced wheel arches.

The latter may receive a new hybrid powertrain, a significantly improved plug-in hybrid version, and possibly a powerful N modification. The latter could combine a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with a rear electric axle, which together would produce about 300 hp.

Another possible, but less likely contender for the show in New York is the updated Santa Fe, which is expected to debut only in 2027. Its updates may include a new grille, vertical LED daytime running lights that will also function as turn signals, and a new Pleos Connect multimedia system.

Context of the auto show and Hyundai’s future plans

The New York Auto Show will be the arena for premieres from a number of manufacturers. Among the planned debuts are two new Subarus, an updated Volkswagen Atlas, a new Infiniti QX65, and the 2027 model year Kia Seltos. Hyundai’s presentation will undoubtedly be one of the central events of the show. This premiere fits into the brand’s aggressive strategy to expand its model range in the North American market, where the company plans to introduce a whole series of new products in the coming years. The focus on hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies in the next Tucson reflects the industry’s overall trend towards electrification, even in the affordable crossover segment. The success of this model is crucial for the brand, as the Tucson has traditionally been one of Hyundai’s most popular and globally significant products.
