Testing New Hardware for the Hyundai Elantra N
Photos taken in South Korea show a car that is externally identical to the current Hyundai Elantra N. However, experts believe this is an early test mule for the future generation of the model. In other words, beneath the body of the current sedan lies completely new hardware. This version is expected to once again become the flagship of the updated Elantra lineup, whose design is anticipated to differ noticeably from today’s.
A detailed inspection reveals that some body elements, such as the corner bumpers, have been modified. But the most important detail is the wheels: they are noticeably wider than those on the current Elantra N. This indicates that the new model has received a wider track, even if the body hasn’t yet been adapted to these changes.
Expected Design and Platform Changes
The next-generation car will be built on an updated version of the current K3 platform, which it shares with the Kona and Kia K4 models. This means virtually every body panel on the Elantra N will be new. A camouflaged prototype of the standard model, spotted back in August, already hinted at serious styling updates.
That prototype featured a redesigned front end with a new grille, LED light bar, and sharply styled daytime running lights. The N version is likely to evolve these ideas, receiving its own bumpers, side skirts, and most likely a fixed rear spoiler.
Possible Powertrain Changes
The main mystery remains what lies under the hood. Recordings show that the test car’s exhaust note is deeper and raspier than that of the current Elantra N. This could indicate either a retuned exhaust system or the installation of a completely new engine.
There is speculation that the next Elantra N might abandon the current 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in favor of the larger 2.5-liter turbocharged engine found in the Sonata N-Line. This idea has merit, although it doesn’t guarantee an automatic increase in power.
As former Hyundai N division boss Albert Biermann noted, a larger engine might not deliver more output than the current setup.
However, even if the figures remain at 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque, it would hardly be considered a disappointment. The current Elantra N is already one of the most exciting compact sports models on the market, and there’s no reason to believe that will change.
The development of a new generation always involves finding a balance between innovation and retaining proven qualities. In the case of the Elantra N, the increased track width and potential engine change could improve dynamic performance and stability, which are key for a sports car. The already different exhaust note could also become part of the model’s new, more emotional character, important for N brand enthusiasts. For now, we must wait for official details, but it’s clear that Hyundai aims to evolve its high-performance lineup without losing their accessibility and thrilling driving character.
