Hyundai Makes Radical Changes to N Models’ Powertrains, and One of Them Loses the Manual Transmission

Confirmation of New Hyundai N Generations

Hyundai has officially confirmed that new generations of the Elantra N and i20 N models are already under development. This means the automaker is continuing to develop its lineup of sports cars, which have gained popularity due to their combination of affordability and high dynamic qualities.

Update for the Elantra N

The Elantra N, which is sold as the i30 Sedan N in some regions, will be built on an updated platform recently spotted during testing in South Korea. Former Hyundai N boss Albert Biermann stated that the model will abandon the current 2.0-liter engine in favor of a larger 2.5-liter unit already used in the Sonata.

This engine will comply with stricter environmental standards and will receive “N-tuning,” Biermann reported.

Although the engine will have a larger displacement, it is not yet clear whether it will receive a significant power increase. It may retain the power level of the current model—at least 276 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque—or even more.

Hybridization of the i20 N

The i20 N, which is not sold in the USA, remains an important part of the N lineup, offering driving fun in a compact format. While the current model is equipped only with a 1.6-liter turbo engine, the new version will receive an auxiliary electric motor. This will not only allow it to meet Euro 7 requirements but also potentially increase power from the current 201 hp to around 270 hp, bringing it closer to the Elantra N’s figures.

Abandoning the Manual Transmission

Unfortunately, the hybrid system will force Hyundai to abandon the six-speed manual transmission in favor of a robotic dual-clutch transmission. It will likely be an eight-speed gearbox, similar to the one installed in the Elantra N, or an updated version of the seven-speed gearbox from the less powerful i20 modifications.

The addition of an electric motor and battery will lead to an increase in the car’s weight, as well as an inevitable price increase. However, if the model retains its dynamic qualities, it will justify the changes.

These updates demonstrate how Hyundai is adapting its sports models to modern requirements without losing their character. The transition to hybrid technologies and more environmentally friendly engines is becoming a necessity, but if the manufacturer manages to preserve the driving pleasure, the new versions will be successful among the brand’s fans.
