Hyundai introduces a monthly fee for the ability to place a Pikachu figurine on the dashboard of the Kona for drivers in Korea

The updated 2027 model year Hyundai Kona has been introduced in the South Korean market. The main changes concerned personalization capabilities, a new black trim package appeared, digital interior themes by subscription, and the starting price was slightly reduced.

New Black Look

The main novelty for the Kona is the “Black Exterior” package. It is available exclusively in Abyss Black Pearl color and is combined with black 18-inch alloy wheels and fully darkened exterior trim. The radiator grille, emblems, underbody protection, decorative bumper trims, and side moldings are also finished in black, contrasting with the body-colored fenders.

Buyers can still choose the standard or sporty N Line trim kit, available in both monochrome and two-tone versions.

Digital Themes by Subscription

Inside, Hyundai is expanding its “Features on Demand” strategy by offering a new subscription-based service for infotainment system themes. Owners can customize the digital instruments and the 12.3-inch multimedia system display using various skins with characters via the official BlueLink store or app.

Among the first available themes are the famous Pokémon Pikachu and Ditto, which appeared for certain Hyundai models in Korea a few weeks ago. For the Kona, local favorites have been added, such as Pororo Fun Train Journey, Tayo Colorful Garage, and Zanmang Loopy. There is also a special theme dedicated to the Hyundai Pony — the first mass-produced car made in South Korea.

Engines Remain Unchanged

The powertrain lineup for the Kona remains unchanged and includes gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric variants. However, the “Black Exterior” trim package is not available for the electric Kona version.

The base naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine produces 147 hp, the turbocharged 1.6-liter — 195 hp, and the hybrid 1.6-liter unit delivers a combined output of 139 hp.

The Kona Electric is offered in two versions: with a single electric motor producing 133 or 201 hp, powered by battery packs with capacities of 48.6 kWh and 64.8 kWh, respectively.

New Price Structure and Trim Levels

For the 2027 model year, Hyundai also restructured the pricing system and trim levels of the Kona in South Korea. This allowed lowering the starting price by 490,000 won (approximately $330) — to 23.60 million won (about $16,000) for the Kona Modern trim. However, affordability has its price: previously standard features like leatherette upholstery, LED interior lighting, an electrochromic rearview mirror, and air conditioning vents for rear passengers are now either optional or available only in higher trims.

Thanks to similar tactics, the Kona Hybrid became cheaper by 590,000 won (about $400) and now starts from 28.96 million won (approximately $19,600). The price for the Kona Electric remained unchanged — from 41.52 million won (about $28,100).

A special offer in the South Korean market is the new Kona 1.6 Turbo H-Pick trim. It standardly includes high-demand features such as a 12.3-inch navigation display, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, and rain sensors, priced at 26.47 million won (about $17,900). The Turbo Black Exterior trim costs 31.37 million won (approximately $21,200), and the flagship N Line is priced at 31.99 million won (about $21,600).

The updates for the 2027 Kona clearly demonstrate two key trends in modern automotive manufacturing: deep digitalization of driver interaction and flexibility in pricing. The introduction of subscription-based themes makes the car more “alive” and adaptable to the owner’s mood after purchase, which could be a significant argument for a younger audience. Simultaneously, lowering the starting price by moving some equipment to options allows the brand to formally expand the model’s accessibility, although the real cost of a fully equipped car may remain at the previous level. This is a smart marketing strategy in a market where price sensitivity remains high.
