Return of the Infiniti Q50 with New Capabilities
Infiniti is reviving the Q50 model as a rear-wheel-drive sedan with a twin-turbo V6 engine borrowed from the Nissan Z. A manual transmission is also planned to be offered with rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive may be possible in the future. This decision reflects a shift in the brand’s strategy, moving away from full electrification due to decreased demand for electric vehicles.
Problems and Changes in Strategy

Instead of making a revolutionary leap into the future, they are returning to their past glory. It is reported that the new Q50S will become the spiritual successor to the beloved G35 model, which promises a lot of excitement for car enthusiasts.
Infiniti discontinued Q50 production last year, initially planning to replace it with a fully electric sedan by the end of the decade. However, due to cooling demand for electric vehicles and reduced incentives, the brand changed course. Instead of an electric model, they are reviving the Q50S with a gasoline engine, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive, planned for 2027.
Technical Details and Expectations
The new Q50S, shown to dealers at a closed event in Las Vegas, is expected to use the Nissan Skyline platform and the engine from the Nissan Z. This means a 400 horsepower (298 kW) V6 will be under the hood, with potentially more power in other trims. A Red Sport version is also reportedly under consideration.
One of the attendees at the presentation said: “The new Q50 is an emotional car with a roaring twin-turbo engine. It’s not practical, but it’s a lot of fun.”
It is expected to be a compact four-door sedan, similar in size to the BMW 3-Series or 2 Gran Coupe. However, not all dealers are happy with the enthusiast-oriented approach. Ed Lennon, president of Circle Infiniti in West Long Branch, New Jersey, noted that business in the northeastern region would grow significantly if the car had all-wheel drive.
Future of the Model and Market Prospects
The main question is whether Infiniti and Nissan can make this model successful. The Kia Stinger was successful in terms of driver satisfaction, but even its luxury version, the Genesis G70, may be discontinued. Perhaps the inclusion of a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive will be the key to success for both brands.
