The interior of this 1971 Chevrolet Camaro is borrowed from future Chevrolet models

Unique 1971 Chevrolet Camaro: a blend of classic and modern

One of the main advantages of classic muscle cars is their interiors, free from cheap black plastic and modern technology. They allow owners to step back in time and enjoy the simplicity of automotive history. However, this 1971 Chevrolet Camaro, which will be auctioned in the US later this year, is somewhat different.

For unknown reasons, the previous owner replaced the original interior with parts from a fifth-generation Camaro. While this may reduce some authenticity, there will be buyers who appreciate the more modern look and feel.

Among the fifth-generation parts used are the dashboard, instrument cluster, transmission tunnel, vents, door panels, and steering wheel. The original seats were also replaced.

Technical specifications and upgrades

The updates are not limited to the interior. This Chevrolet, sold through the Mecum auction, is equipped with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 LS3 engine paired with a six-speed T56 manual transmission. Power is sent to the rear wheels. The odometer reads 34,849 miles (56,084 km), but it is unknown whether this is actual mileage or related to the installed modern engine control unit (ECU).

Engine upgrades include Ridetech coilover suspension and Wilwood brakes. The Camaro also rides on 18-inch American Racing wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires. Changes have also been made to the front end of the car, giving it a more aggressive look.

Mecum auction and collection

Mecum will offer the car for sale at its event in Nashville on September 26 as part of the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage collection. Other vehicles in this collection include a custom 1972 Chevrolet Camper Van, a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, and a 1969 Dodge Daytona.

This car is an interesting example of how a classic muscle car can be adapted to modern requirements without losing its soul. While replacing the interior with parts from a later model may spark debate among purists, it undoubtedly enhances comfort and usability. The combination of the powerful LS3 engine, modern suspension, and brakes makes this Camaro not just a beautiful showpiece but a true driver’s car ready for active use on the road. It is worth noting that such hybrid projects often attract the attention of collectors looking for something unique that combines the best of different eras.
